Planning a trip from San Francisco to Muir Woods? Check out our favorite ways to get from the city to the redwood forest!
Muir Woods National Monument, located just a few miles north of San Francisco, is a must-see for Bay Area locals and tourists alike. Why? This national park site is home to some of the only remaining old-growth coastal redwoods in the world! Whether you consider yourself an avid explorer or simply not the outdoorsy type, we think these ancient giants will take your breath away.
Here are our favorite ways to get from San Francisco to Muir Woods!
Book the Direct Shuttle
Our standalone shuttle from San Francisco to Muir Woods is the only one of its kind in the Bay Area. With this shuttle, you’ll enjoy a comfortable round-trip ride to and from the park. We pick-up and drop-off at the same location on Columbus Avenue, so you won’t have to deal with the stress of driving, parking, and planning that you would have to do if you set off to Muir Woods on your own.
This is the only Muir Woods Shuttle that takes you across the Golden Gate Bridge and up north into the park! So unlike the Marin Transit shuttle that leaves from Sausalito, Mill Valley, and Marin City, you won’t have to figure out transportation across the bridge. We’ll take care of everything for you!
Drive to Muir Woods
The 16-mile journey across the Golden Gate Bridge will take you at least 40 minutes, but often longer. Please be aware that you will be driving up Mount Tamalpais and that there is heavy traffic along the route. You will need to reserve a parking spot well in advance of your trip at a cost of $8 per vehicle.

Take A Muir Woods Bus Tour
Taking a tour is one of the best ways of getting to the park from the city. A bus tour allows you to sit back and relax, and remove any stress of driving, parking, and planning that you would have to do if you set off to Muir Woods on your own.
The recommended tour from San Francisco is the Ultimate Day in the Bay with Muir Woods. This small group tour allows you to explore San Francisco, Sausalito, and Muir Woods all in one day.
Bike To Muir Woods
Biking to Muir Woods is an option, but not recommended. Once you cross over the Golden Gate Bridge, this stunning bike ride becomes treacherous, maneuvering around big buses and the mountain road’s sharp turns.
The suggested alternative is to bike ride across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito and then catch a mini-bus ride to Muir Woods. The Bike the Bridge & Shuttle to Muir Woods Tour will allow you to enjoy an easy ride from San Francisco to the beautiful seaside town, Sausalito, where you will be able to drop off your bike, and enjoy a shuttle ride up to Muir Woods.
MARIN TRANSIT MUIR WOODS SHUTTLE
If you are visiting Muir Woods on the weekend, or during the summer, Marin Transit operates a Muir Woods shuttle that leaves from Sausalito, Mill Valley, and Marin City Hub. The shuttle stops at three locations, bringing visitors up to Muir Woods every sixty minutes.
We recommend that you take the ferry from Pier 39 to Sausalito, and then catch the shuttle bus up to Muir Woods.
Reservations are required for the Marin Transit shuttle. Keep in mind that tickets sell out on busier weekends, so be sure to book in advance. Also, please note that shuttle reservations are time and location-specific and the tickets are round-trip.
TAKE AN UBER, LYFT OR TAXI UP TO MUIR WOODS
Another way to get to Muir Woods is by ride-share. This is one of the least cost-effective way of getting to and from Muir Woods, costing approximately $50 each way.
Please keep in mind that you will be able to ride-share from San Francisco to Muir Woods, but since there’s no cell phone reception, or Wi-Fi you won’t be able to order one for the way back.
Luckily, there’s still a functioning pay phone that you can use to call a cab to take you back to San Francisco, or to Sausalito, where you can catch the ferry back to the city. A taxi from Muir Woods to San Francisco will cost you $70 or more.
