Operating hours and seasons:
Muir Woods is open every day of the year from 8:00 a.m. to sunset. The Visitor Center is open everyday at 9:00 a.m. The Muir Woods Trading Company and Cafe open at 9:00 a.m. and closes about an hour before the park closes.
Disability accessibility and service animals:
There are segments of paved trails that are accessible by wheelchair. Service animals are welcome with proper paperwork.
The coastal redwood forest is cool most times of the year with temperatures ranging from 40 - 70 degrees Fahrenheit or 4 - 21 degrees Celsius. From late October to early May rain may be in the forecast. Summer months (June-August) can be warmer but it is generally cool and dry. Expect heavy fog in the morning, burning off in the afternoon. Some say fall (August-October) is the best weather of the year. But, don't let the weather stop you from having fun. If you're dressed for the elements and wearing sturdy shoes, you will enjoy your walk. Link to weather
Muir Woods Entrance Fee is $15USD for those 16 years and over (this can be paid with cash or credit card on-site). Children are free.
Arriving to the park:
Proceed to the main parking lot as you drive into the park. Follow the signs to the accessible parking stalls located closest to the Visitor Center. Accessible restrooms are located across from the parking stalls. The surface material within the entry plaza is a compacted mix of recycled asphalt and dirt. The surface is firm and stable. There are several accessible benches located in the entry plaza.
Along the trails:
Once you arrive, head towards the Visitor's Center. Here is where you can request assistive listening devices for our Ranger Led Tours and Mp3 players containing an audio described recording of the Muir Woods Brochure. The Visitor Center also provides a copy of the Muir Woods Brochure in Braille along with a Braille Trail Map. After stopping at the Visitors Center, follow the raised accessible boardwalk. This boardwalk is part of the Muir Woods Main Loop trail. If you follow the raised boardwalk to the right it will lead to an accessible gift shop, café and restroom facility. Signage is provided.
If you choose to continue into the forest, the accessible boardwalk will continue for several hundred feet to Founders Grove. There are several informational waysides along the boardwalk. If you proceed past the boardwalk you will encounter an asphalt trail which is usable; however, it contains potholes and severe cracks due to heaving tree roots. Link to Muir Woods day hikes
What to pack:
We suggest wearing comfortable shoes and bringing a jacket or sweater, as the giant redwoods can affect the temperature in the early morning and evening. Be sure to bring plenty of water if you plan on spending a longer day amongst the old growth forest.
Where to eat:
Muir Woods Trading Company is the in-park concessionaire facility which serves meals and snacks throughout the day, located just inside the Muir Woods entrance.
